Vesper Summary

Vesper is a small village located in Wood County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wisconsin Rapids-Marshfield, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Vesper was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Grand Rapids. The town was named after the nearby Vesper Creek, which was named after the Latin word for evening, “vesper”. The first settlers were mostly farmers and loggers, and the town quickly grew to become a thriving community.
In the early 1900s, the town was home to a number of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a cheese factory. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the logging industry moved away and the population began to decline. The town was eventually annexed by the city of Wisconsin Rapids in the 1950s.

Geography

Vesper is located at 44°25′17″N 89°51′45″W (44.421445, -89.862445). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Vesper’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The town also has a number of small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay.
The town is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Vesper Historical Society Museum, the Vesper Country Club, and the Vesper Golf Course.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,203.3 people per square mile (464.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.6/km2).
