Unity Summary

Unity is a town located in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wausau, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Unity was first settled in the late 1840s by German immigrants. The town was officially founded in 1854 and was named after the concept of unity among the settlers. The town was originally part of the town of Berlin, but was split off in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Unity was a major center for the lumber industry. The town was home to several sawmills and a large tannery. The town also had a large brickyard, which produced bricks for many of the buildings in the area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Unity is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of small businesses. The town is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Unity Historical Society Museum, the Unity Water Tower, and the Unity Dam.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 441.2 people per square mile (170.3/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 178.3 per square mile (68.8/km2).
