Townsend Summary

Townsend is a small town located in Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Marinette, WI–MI Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Townsend was founded in 1876 by William Townsend, a lumberman from Michigan. He purchased land in the area and built a sawmill, which became the center of the town. The town was originally called Townsendville, but the name was changed to Townsend in 1883.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century, and by 1900 it had a population of over 1,000. The town was home to several businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a general store, and a post office.

Geography

Townsend is located at 45°25′N 88°14′W (45.4133, -88.2333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Townsend is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and hay. The town is also home to several tourist attractions, including the Townsend Historical Society Museum, the Townsend Logging Museum, and the Townsend Nature Center.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 902.2 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 387.7 per square mile (149.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.54% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
