Sussex Summary
Sussex, Wisconsin is a village located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,518 at the 2010 census. Sussex is located in the Town of Lisbon, and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Sussex was first settled in 1842 by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as Lisbon Corners, and was later renamed Sussex in 1894. The name was chosen to honor the Duke of Sussex, who was the son of King George III of England.
The village was incorporated in 1906, and the first mayor was elected in 1907. The village grew rapidly in the early 20th century, and by the 1950s, it had become a popular suburb of Milwaukee.
Geography
Sussex is located at 43°10'25"N 88°10'45"W (43.173611, -88.179167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Sussex is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The village is home to several large manufacturing companies, including Briggs & Stratton, which produces small engines, and Quad/Graphics, which produces printing and publishing services.
The village is also home to several retail stores, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Target, and a Kohl's.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 10,518 people, 3,945 households, and 2,845 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,039.2 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 796.2 per square mile (307.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 3,945 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $62,917, and the median income for a family was $71,917. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $35,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,917. About 2.2% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
