Seymour Summary
Seymour is a city located in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Appleton, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Seymour was founded in 1854 by William Seymour, a settler from New York. The city was named after him. The first settlers were mostly of German and Irish descent. The city was incorporated in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Seymour was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was home to several sawmills and a large paper mill. The paper mill was the largest employer in the city until it closed in the early 1990s.
Geography
Seymour is located at 44°25′N 88°20′W (44.4133, -88.3337). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.17 square miles (10.78 km2), of which, 4.14 square miles (10.71 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.07 km2) is water.
Economy
Seymour's economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics manufacturer, and a metal fabrication plant. Agriculture is also an important part of the local economy, with dairy farming being the most common type of farming in the area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 3,451 people, 1,521 households, and 890 families residing in the city. The population density was 835.2 people per square mile (322.3/km2). There were 1,619 housing units at an average density of 393.3 per square mile (151.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $23,750 for females.
