Rio Summary

Rio is a village located in Columbia County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Rio was founded in 1845 by settlers from New York. The village was named after the Rio Grande River in Texas. The first post office was established in 1848. The village was incorporated in 1887.

Geography

Rio is located at 43°25'25" North, 89°25'45" West (43.423, -89.429). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Rio is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants. The village also has a public library and a post office.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 617.2 per square mile (238.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.9% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
