Pound Summary
Pound is a small town located in Oconto County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Pound was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Oconto. The town was named after the nearby Pound River, which was named after the Native American word for “river”. The first settlers were mostly farmers and loggers, and the town quickly grew to become a thriving community.
In the early 1900s, the town was home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a creamery, a cheese factory, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the lumber industry moved away from the area. The population dropped from a peak of 1,845 in 1920 to 1,541 in 2010.
Geography
Pound is located at 44°45′N 88°17′W (44.75, -88.28). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Pound is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to a number of farms, including dairy farms, beef farms, and vegetable farms. The town also has a number of tourist attractions, including the Pound River State Park, the Oconto County Historical Museum, and the Oconto County Fairgrounds.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,541 people, 645 households, and 431 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 572.5 per square mile (221.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
