Potosi Summary

Potosi is a small village located in Grant County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 590 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Platteville Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Potosi was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from Potosi, Missouri. The village was named after the original settlement in Missouri. The first settlers were mostly of German and Irish descent. The village was incorporated in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Potosi was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a brewery, a hotel, a bank, a creamery, a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The village also had a post office, a school, and a church.

Geography

Potosi is located at (42.717, -90.837). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Potosi is a small rural community with a limited economy. The village is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 590 people, 233 households, and 162 families residing in the village. The population density was 990.2 people per square mile (382.2/km2). There were 247 housing units at an average density of 412.2 per square mile (159.2/km2).
