Portage Summary
Portage, Wisconsin is a city located in Columbia County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,662 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Columbia County. The city is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Portage was founded in 1836 by settlers from New York and New England. The city was named after the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway, which was known as the Portage. The city was incorporated in 1854.
In the late 19th century, Portage was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was home to several sawmills and planing mills, as well as a large paper mill. The city was also home to a number of other industries, including a brewery, a canning factory, and a brickyard.
Geography
Portage is located at 43°33′N 89°27′W (43.55, -89.45). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.90 square miles (15.27 km2), of which, 5.89 square miles (15.24 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
Economy
Portage is home to a number of businesses and industries. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a canning factory, and a brickyard. The city is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 10,662 people, 4,521 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,811.3 people per square mile (699.7/km2). There were 4,845 housing units at an average density of 822.3 per square mile (317.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 4,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $48,917. Males had a median income of $35,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,917. About 6.7% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.7% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
