Port Washington Summary

Port Washington is a city located in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, about 25 miles north of Milwaukee. The population was 11,250 at the 2010 census.

History

Port Washington was first settled in 1835 by a group of German immigrants led by John Schnell. The city was originally named Saukville, but was changed to Port Washington in 1846. The name was chosen to honor the first president of the United States, George Washington.
The city was incorporated in 1882 and has since grown to become a major port city on Lake Michigan. The city is home to the Port Washington Yacht Club, which was founded in 1883.

Geography

Port Washington is located at 43°22′N 87°51′W (43.3667, -87.85). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which, 7.9 square miles (20.5 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) is water.

Economy

Port Washington is a major port city on Lake Michigan and is home to a variety of industries. The city is home to several large companies, including the Port Washington Power Plant, which is the largest power plant in Wisconsin. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and other services.
The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Port Washington Lighthouse, the Port Washington Marina, and the Port Washington Historical Society.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,250 people, 4,717 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 5,068 housing units at an average density of 637.3 per square mile (246.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,917. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $31,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
