Plover Summary
Plover, Wisconsin is a village located in Portage County, Wisconsin. It is part of the Stevens Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 12,123 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Plover was first settled in the early 1840s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Little Chicago" due to its resemblance to the larger city. The name was changed to Plover in 1856, after the plover bird, which was abundant in the area.
The village was incorporated in 1876 and has since grown to become the largest village in Portage County. Plover is home to several businesses, including a paper mill, a cheese factory, and a brewery.
Geography
Plover is located at 44°27′N 89°32′W (44.45, -89.53). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 5.1 square miles (13.2 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Plover is home to several businesses, including a paper mill, a cheese factory, and a brewery. The village is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
The village is served by the Stevens Point Municipal Airport, which is located just outside of the village limits.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 12,123 people, 4,845 households, and 3,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,364.2 people per square mile (912.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 997.2 per square mile (385.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $21,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
