Oregon Summary

Oregon, Wisconsin is a small village located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on the western shore of Lake Koshkonong, a large lake in the Rock River Valley. The village is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Oregon was 9,231.

History

The area that is now Oregon was first settled in the early 1840s by settlers from New England. The village was originally known as Oregon Centre, and was incorporated in 1846. The name was changed to Oregon in 1872.
The village was an important stop on the Chicago and North Western Railway, which ran through the village from 1871 to 1971. The railway was a major factor in the growth of the village, and it was also the site of a major train wreck in 1891.

Geography

Oregon is located at 43°11'25"N 89°20'45"W (43.1903, -89.3457). It is situated on the western shore of Lake Koshkonong, a large lake in the Rock River Valley. The village is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which, 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (2.45%) is water.

The village is also home to several large employers, including the Oregon School District, the Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Oregon Public Library.

As of the 2010 census, there were 9,231 people, 3,717 households, and 2,541 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,241.3 people per square mile (867.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 962.2 per square mile (371.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
