Ogema Summary

Ogema is a small town located in Price County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Price County.

History

Ogema was founded in 1883 by the Wisconsin Central Railroad. The town was named after the Ojibwe word for "chief". The first settlers in the area were mostly of German and Scandinavian descent. The town was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Ogema was a thriving logging and lumber town. The town was home to several sawmills, a planing mill, and a shingle mill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, a post office, and a general store.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the logging industry moved away. The Great Depression further hurt the town's economy. In the 1940s, the town began to recover as the lumber industry returned.

Geography

Ogema is located at 45°25'17" North, 90°17'45" West (45.4214, -90.2958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Ogema's economy is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The town also has a small airport.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 230 households, and 140 families residing in the town. The population density was 605.6 people per square mile (233.7/km2). There were 250 housing units at an average density of 277.8 per square mile (107.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 230 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,945.
