Mukwonago Summary

Mukwonago is a village located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,355 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.

History

Mukwonago was first settled in 1836 by a group of Potawatomi Indians led by Chief Wau-wau-muck-a-now-a-go. The name Mukwonago is derived from the Potawatomi word for "bear". The village was incorporated in 1892.

Geography

Mukwonago is located at 42°50'N 88°20'W (42.829, -88.333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which, 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (2.44%) is water.

Economy

Mukwonago is home to several businesses, including a variety of manufacturing, retail, and service companies. The village is also home to the headquarters of the Wisconsin-based Kohl's department store chain.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,845 people, 2,541 households, and 1,919 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,664.3 people per square mile (642.3/km2). There were 2,619 housing units at an average density of 637.3 per square mile (246.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $68,917. Males had a median income of $45,917 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,945. About 1.7% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
