Montello Summary
Montello, Wisconsin is a small village located in Marquette County, Wisconsin. It is situated on the Fox River, about 25 miles northwest of Madison. The population of Montello was 1,541 at the 2010 census.
History
Montello was first settled in 1845 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “Montello City” and was incorporated in 1856. The name “Montello” is derived from the Italian word for “mountain”.
The village was an important stop on the Chicago and North Western Railway, which ran through the village from 1871 to 1971. The railway was a major factor in the growth of the village, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people to and from Montello.
Geography
Montello is located at 43°51′N 89°25′W (43.851, -89.417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The Fox River runs through the village, and there are several small lakes in the area, including Lake Montello, which is located just south of the village.
Economy
The economy of Montello is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
The village is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a furniture factory, and a plastics factory.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,541 people, 645 households, and 393 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,279.2 people per square mile (493.2/km2). There were 690 housing units at an average density of 572.5 per square mile (221.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
