History

Mayville was founded in 1844 by a group of settlers from New York. The city was named after Mayville, New York, the hometown of the settlers. The city was incorporated in 1853.
In the late 19th century, Mayville was a major center for the production of cheese and butter. The city was also home to several breweries, including the Mayville Brewing Company, which was founded in 1867 and operated until the early 20th century.

The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
