Marengo Summary

Marengo is a small town located in Iowa County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Marengo was founded in 1845 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after the Battle of Marengo, which was fought in 1800 during the French Revolutionary Wars. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to include a post office, a school, a church, and a general store.
In the late 19th century, Marengo was a popular destination for tourists, who came to enjoy the area's natural beauty and outdoor activities. The town was also known for its cheese factories, which produced some of the finest cheese in the state.

Geography

Marengo is located at 43°14'25"N 90°17'45"W (43.240278, -90.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Marengo's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of other farms that produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females.
