Ladysmith Summary

Ladysmith is a city located in Rusk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,414 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rusk County. The city is located on the Flambeau River.

History

Ladysmith was founded in 1885 by the Wisconsin Central Railroad. The city was named after Lady Smith, the wife of the railroad's president. The city was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 1900s, Ladysmith was a major lumbering center. The city was home to several sawmills and a large paper mill. The paper mill was the largest employer in the city until it closed in the late 1970s.

Geography

Ladysmith is located at 45°25'25" North, 91°6'25" West (45.423, -91.107). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which, 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Ladysmith's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several dairy farms and a large cranberry farm. The city also has several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and a few manufacturing companies.
Tourism is an important part of the local economy. The city is home to several parks, including the Flambeau River State Forest and the Ladysmith Historical Museum. The city also hosts several annual festivals, including the Ladysmith Days Festival and the Ladysmith Cranberry Festival.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,541 people, 1,521 households, and 945 families residing in the city. The population density was 862.2 people per square mile (333.2/km2). There were 1,619 housing units at an average density of 393.3 per square mile (151.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.17% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
