Jefferson, Wisconsin is a city located in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, United States. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and is located in the southeastern part of the state. The population was 7,973 at the 2010 census.
History
Jefferson was founded in 1836 by settlers from New York and New England. The city was named after Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. The first settlers were primarily farmers and the city quickly grew to become an important agricultural center. In 1845, the first railroad line was built through the city, connecting it to Milwaukee and Chicago. This allowed for the transportation of goods and people, and helped to spur the growth of the city.
In 1853, the first newspaper was established in Jefferson, and in 1856 the first bank was opened. The city continued to grow and by the late 19th century, it had become an important industrial center. The city was home to several factories, including a flour mill, a paper mill, a foundry, and a furniture factory.

Jefferson is located at 43°7′17″N 88°50′17″W (43.1214, -88.8381). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.9 km2), all of it land.

There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
