Iola Summary

Iola is a small village located in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waupaca Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Iola is located at 44°25′N 89°2′W (44.4133, -89.0333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Iola was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Iola, the daughter of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1856.
The village was incorporated in 1876. In the late 19th century, Iola was a major center for the lumber industry. The village was also home to a number of sawmills, gristmills, and other businesses.

Economy

Iola's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.
