Independence Summary

Independence is a small city located in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the La Crosse-Onalaska, WI-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Independence was founded in 1854 by settlers from New England. The city was named after the Declaration of Independence. The first settlers were mostly farmers and the city was known for its agricultural production. In the late 19th century, the city was a major producer of wheat and other grains.
