Hortonville is a village located in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Appleton, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Hortonville was founded in 1851 by William Horton, a settler from New York. The village was originally known as "Horton's Mills" and was located on the Wolf River. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Hortonville was a major producer of cheese and butter. The village was also home to a number of sawmills, gristmills, and other small businesses.

Geography

Hortonville is located at 44°19′N 88°37′W (44.3167, -88.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hortonville is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants. The village is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a plastics manufacturer, and a metal fabrication plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,719 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,233.2 people per square mile (476.2/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 526.4 per square mile (203.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
