Hatley Summary

Hatley is a village located in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wausau, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Hatley was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers from Hatley, Quebec, Canada. The village was named after the Canadian town. The first settlers were mostly French-Canadian and were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the potential for farming. The first post office was established in 1877.
In the early 1900s, Hatley was a thriving lumber town. The village was home to several sawmills, a grist mill, a creamery, and a cheese factory. The lumber industry declined in the 1920s, and the village shifted its focus to agriculture.

Geography

Hatley is located at 44°45'25" North, 89°45'25" West (44.756944, -89.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy
