History

Greenwood was founded in 1856 by settlers from New York and New England. The city was named after the Greenwood family, who were among the first settlers. The city was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Greenwood was a major lumbering center. The city was home to several sawmills and a large tannery. The city also had a large brickyard and a number of other industries.

The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
