Gays Mills Summary

Gays Mills is a village in Crawford County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 845 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Kickapoo Valley, along the Kickapoo River.

History

Gays Mills was founded in 1847 by John Gays, a settler from Pennsylvania. He purchased the land from the government and built a mill on the Kickapoo River. The village was named after him. The mill was a success and the village grew rapidly. By the late 19th century, Gays Mills had become a major center for the production of apples. The village was incorporated in 1891.

Geography

Gays Mills is located at 43°17'25"N 90°51'45"W (43.290278, -90.862472). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Gays Mills is a rural community with a strong agricultural base. The village is home to several apple orchards, as well as a number of small businesses. The village is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Gays Mills Apple Festival, which is held annually in September.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 845 people, 343 households, and 233 families residing in the village. The population density was 690.3 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 369 housing units at an average density of 300.3 per square mile (115.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.53% White, 0.12% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.
There were 343 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
