Fremont Summary

Fremont, Wisconsin is a small village located in Waupaca County, Wisconsin. It is situated on the Wolf River, which is a tributary of the Fox River. The village is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Appleton and about 40 miles northwest of Green Bay. The population of Fremont was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Fremont was first settled in 1848 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after John C. Fremont, an explorer and politician who was the first Republican presidential candidate in 1856. The village was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Fremont was a major lumbering center. The village was home to several sawmills and a large paper mill. The paper mill was the largest employer in the village until it closed in the early 20th century.

Geography

Fremont is located at 44°25'N 88°45'W (44.4167, -88.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Fremont's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village also has a small industrial park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.
