History

Fennimore was founded in 1851 by William Fennimore, a settler from New York. The city was named after him. The first post office was established in 1853. The city was incorporated in 1858.
Fennimore was a major stop on the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad, which ran through the city from 1857 to 1871. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the city.

Geography

Fennimore is located at 43°14'17" North, 90°45'17" West (43.238, -90.752). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Fennimore is a small rural community with a strong agricultural base. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a lumber yard, and a variety of other retail stores. The city also has a number of manufacturing companies, including a cheese factory, a furniture factory, and a plastics factory.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,945 people, 1,179 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.3 people per square mile (510.7/km2). There were 1,250 housing units at an average density of 556.2 per square mile (214.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.45% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48% of the population.
There were 1,179 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
