Dorchester is a village located in Clark County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Marshfield–Wisconsin Rapids Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Dorchester was first settled in 1854 by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as "New Berlin" and was later renamed "Dorchester" after the town of Dorchester, Massachusetts. The village was officially incorporated in 1891.

Economy

The economy of Dorchester is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a cheese factory, a sawmill, and a feed mill. The village also has a small retail sector, with several stores and restaurants.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 902.2 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 382.2 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
