De Soto Summary

De Soto is a village located in Vernon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the La Crosse-Onalaska, WI-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

De Soto was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from the East Coast. The village was named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. The first settlers were mostly farmers and the village grew slowly. In 1872, the first post office was established and the village was incorporated in 1876.
In the late 19th century, the village was a major center for the lumber industry. The village was home to several sawmills and a large number of logging camps. The lumber industry declined in the early 20th century and the village shifted to a more agricultural economy.
