History

The area that is now Cornell was first settled in the late 1840s by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally known as “New York Corners”, and was later renamed to Cornell in 1856. The city was officially incorporated in 1872.
Cornell was an important center of commerce in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was home to several sawmills, a flour mill, a brickyard, and a number of other businesses. The city was also home to a number of churches, including the First Congregational Church, which was founded in 1872.

Cornell is located at 44°51'N 91°25'W (44.851, -91.417). The city is situated on the Chippewa River, and is part of the Eau Claire Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of which is land.
