Coloma Summary
Coloma is a small village located in Waushara County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wautoma Micropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Coloma was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Coloma, Michigan, which was named after the Spanish word for “dove”. The first post office was established in 1856.
The village was incorporated in 1876. In the late 19th century, Coloma was a major center for the lumber industry. The village was also home to a number of sawmills, gristmills, and other businesses.
Geography
Coloma is located at 44°25′N 89°25′W (44.4133, -89.4167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Coloma is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 845 people, 339 households, and 233 families residing in the village. The population density was 690.4 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 369 housing units at an average density of 305.8 per square mile (118.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 339 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $18,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
