Clayton Summary

Clayton is a small town located in Barron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rice Lake Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Clayton was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from Clayton, New York. The town was named after the New York town, and the first post office was established in 1873. The first school was built in 1876, and the first church was built in 1877.
In the early 1900s, Clayton was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a cheese factory, a creamery, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and a newspaper.

Geography

Clayton is located at 45°25'25" North, 91°50'45" West (45.423, -91.846). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Clayton is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of other farms that produce corn, soybeans, and hay.
The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 379.2 per square mile (146.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
