History
Chilton was founded in 1845 by a group of German immigrants led by John Chilton. The city was named after him. The city was incorporated in 1871.

Chilton is home to several businesses, including a cheese factory, a paper mill, and a manufacturing plant. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,902 people, 1,619 households, and 1,039 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,597.3 inhabitants per square mile (616.2/km2). There were 1,743 housing units at an average density of 711.4 per square mile (274.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.4% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
The median age in the city was 38.7 years. 25.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 24.3% were from 25 to 44; 25.2% were from 45 to 64; and 17.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.2% male and 51.8% female.
