History

The area that is now Burlington was first settled in 1836 by settlers from New England. The first settler was William S. Gilbert, who built a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River. The area was originally known as "Gilbert's Settlement" and was later renamed "Burlington" after the city of Burlington, Vermont.
The city was officially incorporated in 1845 and was named the county seat of Racine County in 1846. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th century, with the arrival of the railroad in 1855 and the establishment of several factories. By the early 20th century, Burlington had become a major industrial center, with several large factories producing a variety of products, including furniture, paper, and textiles.

Geography

Burlington is located at 42°37′N 88°14′W (42.619, -88.233). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.45 square miles (14.11 km2), of which, 5.44 square miles (14.09 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.02 km2) is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 10,464 people, 4,093 households, and 2,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,919.2 inhabitants per square mile (738.7/km2). There were 4,409 housing units at an average density of 809.7 per square mile (312.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.4% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.08.
The median age in the city was 36.7 years. 25.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27.2% were from 25 to 44; 25.2% were from 45 to 64; and 14.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.2% male and 51.8% female.
Burlington is a diverse city, with a variety of cultures and backgrounds represented. The city is home to a large Hispanic population, as well as a growing Asian population. The city also has a large population of Polish and German descent.
