History

The area that is now Baldwin was first settled in 1854 by a group of Norwegian immigrants. The town was originally named “Baldwinville” after the first settler, John Baldwin. The town was officially incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Baldwin was a thriving agricultural community. The town was known for its dairy farms and its production of cheese. The town also had a number of sawmills and gristmills.
In the early 20th century, Baldwin began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved to larger cities in search of better job opportunities. The town’s population dropped from 1,845 in 1910 to 1,619 in 1930.

Baldwin is located at 45°14'N 92°25'W (45.23, -92.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The town is located on the banks of the Apple River. The Apple River flows through the town and is a popular destination for canoeing and kayaking.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 672.5 per square mile (259.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
