Argyle Summary

Argyle, Wisconsin is a small village located in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. It is situated on the banks of the Pecatonica River, about 25 miles east of the state capital of Madison. The village has a population of 1,092 as of the 2010 census.

History

Argyle was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Argyll, Scotland, the ancestral home of the settlers. The first settlers were primarily of Scottish and Irish descent. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Argyle is located at 43°25'N 89°45'W (43.4167, -89.7500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the banks of the Pecatonica River. The river is a tributary of the Rock River, which flows south into Illinois. The village is located in the Driftless Area, a region of Wisconsin that was not glaciated during the last ice age.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,092 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,203.3 people per square mile (464.7/km2).
