History

The area that is now Amherst was first settled in 1848 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally called “New Berlin”, but was later changed to Amherst in 1854 in honor of Lord Jeffrey Amherst, a British general who fought in the French and Indian War.
The town was officially incorporated in 1856 and the first post office was established in 1857. The first school was built in 1858 and the first church was built in 1859.
