Alma Summary

Alma is a city located in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 837 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Buffalo County.

History

Alma was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The city was named after the daughter of one of the settlers, Alma Smith. The city was incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Alma was a major center for the lumber industry. The city was home to several sawmills and a large paper mill. The paper mill was the largest employer in the city until it closed in the early 20th century.

Geography

Alma is located at 44°30′N 91°45′W (44.50, -91.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Alma's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several dairy farms and is a popular destination for hunters and fishermen. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the city.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 837 people, 339 households, and 224 families residing in the city. The population density was 690.2 people per square mile (266.7/km2). There were 359 housing units at an average density of 294.2 per square mile (113.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.81% White, 0.12% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48% of the population.
There were 339 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females.
