Alma Center is a village located in Jackson County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Black River Falls Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Alma Center was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Alma", after the daughter of one of the settlers. The village was later renamed "Alma Center" to distinguish it from other towns in the area with the same name.
The village was officially incorporated in 1876. In the late 19th century, Alma Center was a thriving lumber town, with several sawmills and a large population of loggers. The village was also home to a number of other businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a cheese factory.
In the early 20th century, the lumber industry began to decline, and the village's population began to decline as well. The village was hit hard by the Great Depression, and many of its businesses closed.

Economy

Alma Center's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
The village is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Alma Center Historical Museum, the Alma Center State Wildlife Area, and the Alma Center State Park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 790.2 people per square mile (305.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 331.2 per square mile (127.5/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $14,945. About 8.3% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
