Redfield Summary
Redfield is a city located in Spink County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,333 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spink County. Redfield is located in the James River Valley, approximately 50 miles north of Aberdeen, South Dakota.
History
Redfield was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, William B. Redfield. The city was incorporated in 1883.
Geography
Redfield is located at 44°31'17" North, 98°6'17" West (44.5214, -98.1047). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Redfield's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a lumber yard.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,541 people, 1,039 households, and 645 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,945.2 people per square mile (750.2/km2). There were 1,139 housing units at an average density of 872.2 per square mile (337.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.12% African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $38,929. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945.
