Redfield Summary

Redfield is a city located in Spink County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 2,333 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spink County. Redfield is located in the James River Valley, approximately 50 miles north of Aberdeen, South Dakota.

History

Redfield was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, William B. Redfield. The city was incorporated in 1883.

Geography

Redfield is located at 44°31'17" North, 98°6'17" West (44.5214, -98.1047). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Redfield's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a lumber yard.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,541 people, 1,039 households, and 645 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,945.2 people per square mile (750.2/km2).
