Orient Summary

Orient is a small town located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, in the United States. It is situated in the extreme southeastern corner of the state, near the border with Nebraska and Iowa. The town is located in Clay County, and is part of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Orient was 545.

History

Orient was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Iowa. The town was named after the nearby Orient Mine, which was named after the Orient Mine in England. The town was incorporated in 1883.
In the early years, Orient was a farming and ranching community. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a hotel, a bank, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a lumberyard.

Geography

Orient is located at 43°17'25" North, 96°45'45" West (43.290278, -96.762500). The town is situated in the extreme southeastern corner of South Dakota, near the border with Nebraska and Iowa.
The town is located in Clay County, and is part of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is situated on the banks of the Big Sioux River.

Economy

The economy of Orient is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms and ranches, as well as a number of businesses. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory and a plastics factory.
