Newell Summary

Newell is a small town located in Butte County, South Dakota, United States. The town is situated on the northern edge of the Black Hills, and is the county seat of Butte County. The population of Newell was 545 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Newell is located at 44°37′N 103°37′W (44.619, -103.619). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

History

Newell was founded in 1883 by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, William Newell. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Economy

The economy of Newell is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The town also has a post office and a bank.
Tourism is an important part of the local economy. The town is home to several attractions, including the Newell Museum, which houses artifacts from the town's history, and the Newell Historical Society, which offers tours of the town. The town also hosts several annual events, including the Newell Days celebration in June and the Newell County Fair in August.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 230 households, and 140 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 250 housing units at an average density of 410.0 per square mile (158.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 230 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,000.
