Montrose Summary
Montrose is a small town located in McCook County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Big Sioux River, and is the county seat of McCook County.
History
Montrose was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the Montrose area of Scotland. The first post office was established in 1882. The town was incorporated in 1883.
Geography
Montrose is located at 43°45'25" North, 97°25'45" West (43.756944, -97.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Montrose is a small agricultural community. The main industries are farming and ranching. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.2 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 241 housing units at an average density of 391.2 per square mile (150.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
