Madison, South Dakota is a city located in Lake County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 6,474 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lake County. Madison is the principal city of the Madison Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Lake and Moody counties.

Geography

Madison is located at 43°59′N 97°10′W (43.983, -97.167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.45 square miles (11.52 km2), of which 4.44 square miles (11.50 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.02 km2) is water.

Economy

Madison is a regional center for agriculture, manufacturing, and retail trade. The city is home to several large employers, including the Madison Regional Health System, Madison School District, and the Lake County Courthouse. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 6,474 people, 2,619 households, and 1,637 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,451.2 people per square mile (561.3/km2). There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 641.2 per square mile (247.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 2,619 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
