Groton Summary

History

The town of Groton, South Dakota is located in Brown County, in the northeastern part of the state. It was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin, who were looking for a place to settle and start a new life. The town was named after Groton, Connecticut, the hometown of one of the settlers.
The first settlers in Groton were mostly farmers, and the town quickly grew to become a thriving agricultural community. The town was incorporated in 1887, and the first mayor was elected in 1888.
In the early 1900s, Groton was a bustling town with a variety of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a lumberyard. The town also had a school, a post office, and a newspaper.
The town continued to grow and prosper throughout the 20th century. In the 1950s, the town was home to a variety of industries, including a flour mill, a creamery, a feed mill, and a furniture factory.
In the late 20th century, Groton began to experience a decline in population as people moved away to larger cities. However, the town has managed to remain a vibrant community, with a variety of businesses and services.

Geography

Groton is located in Brown County, in the northeastern part of South Dakota. It is situated on the banks of the James River, about 25 miles northwest of Aberdeen. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and prairies, and is located in the heart of the James River Valley.
The climate in Groton is typical of the Midwest, with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in the summer is around 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average temperature in the winter is around 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
