Castlewood Summary

Castlewood is a small town located in Hamlin County, South Dakota, United States. The population was estimated to be 545 in 2020. The town is located on the Big Sioux River, and is part of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Castlewood was founded in 1881 by a group of settlers from Wisconsin. The town was named after the nearby Castlewood State Park, which was named after the castle-like rock formations in the area. The town was incorporated in 1883.
In the early 1900s, Castlewood was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a creamery.

Geography

Castlewood is located in southeastern South Dakota, in Hamlin County. The town is situated on the Big Sioux River, and is part of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is located approximately 25 miles east of Sioux Falls.
The town has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land. The town is located at an elevation of 1,541 feet above sea level.
