Burke Summary

Burke, South Dakota is a small town located in Gregory County in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated on the Missouri River, and is the county seat of Gregory County. The town has a population of approximately 1,000 people, and is the only incorporated town in the county.

History

Burke was founded in 1881 by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the railroad's president, Thomas Burke. The railroad was instrumental in the development of the town, as it provided transportation for settlers and goods.
The town was incorporated in 1883, and the first post office was established in 1884. The town grew rapidly, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving agricultural center. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a newspaper, and a variety of stores.
In the early 1900s, Burke was a popular destination for tourists, as it was located on the Missouri River. The town was also home to a number of resorts, which attracted visitors from all over the country.

Geography

Burke is located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, in Gregory County. It is situated on the Missouri River, and is approximately 30 miles from the Nebraska border. The town is located in the Missouri Plateau region of the state, and is surrounded by rolling hills and prairies.
