Watonga is a city located in Blaine County, Oklahoma. It is the county seat of Blaine County and is located in the central part of the state. The population of Watonga was 3,087 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.3 percent from 2,845 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Watonga is located at 35°45'25" North, 98°27'45" West (35.756944, -98.462500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

History

Watonga was founded in 1901 by the Watonga Townsite Company. The town was named after the Watonga tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area. The town was incorporated in 1906 and has been the county seat of Blaine County since 1907.

The economy of Watonga is largely based on agriculture and oil production. The city is home to several large agricultural operations, including a large cattle ranch and a large wheat farm. The city is also home to several oil and gas production companies.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 0.7% African American, 11.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 3.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older.
