Verden Summary

Verden, Oklahoma is a small town located in Grady County, Oklahoma. It is situated on the banks of the Washita River, approximately 25 miles south of Chickasha and 40 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. The town was founded in 1892 and was named after a nearby creek. As of the 2010 census, the population of Verden was 545.

Geography

Verden is located at 35°17'25"N 97°51'45"W (35.290278, -97.8625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

History

Verden was founded in 1892 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Chickasha. The town was named after a nearby creek, and the first post office was established in 1893. The town grew quickly, and by 1900, it had a population of over 500.
Verden was a thriving agricultural community in the early 20th century, with cotton, corn, and wheat being the main crops. The town also had a number of businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the Great Depression hit the area. Many of the businesses closed, and the population dropped to just over 200 by 1930.
The town began to recover in the 1940s, and by 1950, the population had grown to over 500. The town continued to grow throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and by 1970, the population had reached over 1,000.

Economy

Verden’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce cotton, corn, wheat, and other crops. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 81.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 15.2% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.2% of the population.
