History
The area that is now Poteau was originally inhabited by the Choctaw Indians. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the late 1840s. The town was originally known as Skullyville, named after the first postmaster, William Skully. In 1872, the town was renamed Poteau, after the nearby Poteau River.
The town was officially incorporated in 1891. During the late 19th century, Poteau was a major trading center for the surrounding area. The town was also a major stop on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway.
Geography
Poteau is located in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, near the Arkansas border. The city is situated at the intersection of U.S. Routes 59 and 271. The city is located approximately 30 miles south of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and approximately 90 miles east of Oklahoma City.
The city has a total area of 8.3 square miles, all of which is land. The city is located in a humid subtropical climate zone, with hot, humid summers and mild winters.

The economy of Poteau is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant and a Georgia-Pacific lumber mill.
